The best beaches and lidos in Malta
Malta is well-known for its beach life, and Sliema is especially famed for its lidos.
Located right on Malta’s coast, this striking part of the island is home to some of the country’s best rocky beaches and is within easy reach of its sandy alternatives in St Julian’s, as well as in the north and south.
Locally, luxury lidos and rocky beaches are the order of the day, and there is plenty of choice within easy walking distance from Two Pillows. Lidos are popular because they offer excellent facilities, and usually include use of a swimming pool as well as access to sunbeds, umbrellas, toilets, showers, food and drink. They provide the perfect spot for relaxing in the Maltese sunshine – ideally with a cocktail in hand and a good book to enjoy!
Lidos all charge for entry, but if you’re on a budget then you can still make the most of the Mediterranean Sea by picking your spot at one of the rocky beaches. Along the Sliema-to-St Julian’s coastline you’ll find flat rocks that make it easy to set up your towel and umbrella for a relaxing day – plus the water is great for swimming and snorkelling. The best spots included Qui si-Sana, Ghar id-Dud, Exiles, Surfside and Fond Ghadir.
If you would rather go to a sandy beach, then we recommend heading to the north of Malta. Mellieha is home to several of the most popular sandy beaches on the island, including the family-friendly Mellieha Bay, pretty Paradise Bay, natural Ghajn Tuffieha and gorgeous Golden Bay.
