Things to do in Malta

Given its size, you may be surprised by how many fantastic things there are do in Malta and Gozo – and the great news is that Sliema, where Two Pillows is conveniently based, is an ideal base from which to explore them all.

Valletta – which is a short ferry ride from Sliema – is the island’s capital city and the mainstay of its historic hotspots and attractions. Start your stay with a visit here, as you explore highlights including Upper Barrakka Gardens, the Malta Experience, the Archaeology Museum and the War Museum. It is also home to some of the island’s most beautiful churches, such as the iconic St John’s Co-Cathedral, which boasts the only signed painting by Carvaggio in the world – the Beheading of St John.

Of course, the prehistoric temples are another must-see for your time in Malta. As the oldest freestanding stone structures in the world, they are completely unique and well-worth a visit.

They’re located in the south of Malta, which makes them the ideal stop on a tour of the area, which should also include the historic Three Cities, the fishing village of Marsaxlokk and the newly-restored Hypogeum underground burial site.

Alternatively, the north also has plenty to see. Mosta Dome is one of the highlights, famed for having the third-largest dome in Europe, and for surviving an attack in World War II when an incoming bomb didn’t explode during a religious celebration. This part of the island is also popular for being more rural, which makes it an excellent place for adventurous outdoor activities like trekking, hiking and rambling.
